In addition to talent and training, marketability plays a significant role in breaking into film. Producers and casting directors may prioritize actors who fit specific demographics, have unique looks, or possess skills that align with the demands of the role. It goes without saying that breaking into film requires a great deal of persistence, resilience, and determination. Rejection is common in the industry, and many successful actors face numerous setbacks before achieving their breakthrough roles. The goal here is not to dissuade the novice actor from pursuing the dream, but to educate about the realities that exist in the industry.
Despite these challenges, it's not impossible for unknown actors to break into film. Filmmaker Terence Gordon of TNG Films understands the roadblocks that exist, but does not let it stop him from depositing his time and money into projects that create opportunities for the novice actor. Terence, along with his team, takes it a step further and casts these actors alongside seasoned ones so they can observe their techniques, professionalism and work ethic firsthand. His colleagues, including writer’s and producer’s, Beth Rondeau Deacon and Anita Sayago, believe these seasoned actors can serve as mentors to the others, offering guidance, advice, and support both on and off set. This mentorship alongside the guidance of Terence and his team, can help further nurture the talent of these actors and provide them with valuable insights into the industry. At the end of the day, the desire to mentor and provide opportunity to new faces and talent is at the team’s core. However, one thing is for certain, these actors must deposit much of their time and attention to the development of the craft if their goal is for the long haul.
Most recently Terence and Beth did exactly this with a recent film they co-wrote and co-executive produced titled “Intent Unknown.” This psychological thriller revolves around four ambitious psychology students who embark on a risky experiment to unravel the mysteries of human behavior. Harper played by Lucy Deacon, chooses her secluded home on the bluff as the perfect location; she and her classmates Luna (Breanna Porter), Chase (Cameron Muston), and Amelia (Analysa Jackson) invite Harold (Ricky Bartlett) a stranger to participate. These actors are bound by a common thread which was a desire to act but little to no practical experience.
Terence and Beth wanted to give these actors an opportunity to be part of an independent film, where they could learn and grow. They took it a step further when they cast renowned actor, Eric Roberts as featured cast member and Julianne Michelle. Not only were these actors gaining invaluable practical knowledge on set with Terence and now Eric, but it stood to reason that a cast included both novice and seasoned actors would create a well balanced ensemble. Each actor would bring their own strengths and weaknesses to the table, resulting in a richer tapestry of performances that would resonate with a wider audience.
The beauty of a production of this nature is that these novice actors begin to hone their acting skills, create a portfolio, build relationships, and above all else, seize an opportunity that is available to few. However, the time spent on set is just the beginning of the journey and it’s what these actors do afterwards that will earn them a place in the industry. They must seize the opportunity for exposure, leverage online platforms, attend industry events, work diligently on their craft every day, and participate in independent film projects to help them gain continued visibility and credibility in the industry.
At the end of the day, fostering a supportive community where talent is nurtured and celebrated regardless of experience level promotes inclusivity. It’s through a culture of growth, collaboration, and mutual respect that enriches the creative process, builds valuable relationships, and contributes to a thriving and inclusive entertainment community. Kudos to Terence and his team for doing just that!

Very exciting times ahead for our team.” And look for the Knight displayed in the movie INTENT UNKNOWN. “I showed this piece of art created by Terence’s son, Asa Gordon to some of my students as we were sitting talking toward the end of class. I remember one of the students hollering out, this is DOPE! Is this going to be on a shirt? And all the kids in the room swarmed around to look. They loved it.”
Despite her recent success in the film industry, Deacon has not forgotten her roots as an educator. She continues to work with schools and educational organizations, using her films as a way to spark conversations and inspire students. She believes that film has the power to educate, inform, and inspire, and is committed to using her talents to make a difference in the world.

Making its way to audiences Summer of 2023
Director, Terence Gordon of TNG Films and Creator of Youthful Ambition YA, recently wrapped on a psychological thriller in Fort Madison, that will be sure to have viewers on the edge of their seats. While they brought in seasoned actors, Eric Roberts and Julianne Michelle, they were sure to add some newcomers as well. It’s always been Terence’s mission under the Youthful Ambition YA Brand and Series, to provide opportunities to new talent. The “Intent Unknown” cast also includes Fort Madison locals, Ricky Bartlett (Harold), Lucy Deacon (Harper), Breanna Porter (Luna), Cameron Muston (Chase) and Analysa Jackson (Amelia).
\
Ricky Barlett, actor and double amputee, has already begun to acquire credits to his name. His most notable work to date is his time on Chicago PD. “Intent Unknown” now has Ricky in the role of Harold, an unstable, crazy, lonely man on a mission to exact revenge. His high geared performance along with his strong southern accent only serves to add to the already psychotic elements of his character.
During pre-production, Ricky asked why he was chosen for the part of Harold. Executive Producer / Writer, Beth Deacon, responded, “because you honestly look scary!” At first Ricky thought it was because he is a double amputee, but Beth affirms that is not the reason he landed the role, although it certainly didn’t hurt his odds. Beth actually came across his photo while searching the Produce Iowa Media Production Directory. She took one look at his face and thought he looked crazy. Beth immediately sent his photo to Terence Gordon who after he conducted some research of his own, knew he would be great for the part.
Lucy Deacon who plays Harper in the film is Beth’s daughter. Lucy’s only acting experience to date, includes a role in a college production of one of Shakespeare’s works; she is also a model for the Happy Mood Swagger brand out of the UK. The role of Harper was perfect for Lucy as she shares many of the same qualities as her character in real life. Lucy gave a superior performance and was great with not only knowing her lines but everyone else’s. Her subtle moves made her a natural and her performance was quite believable. It doesn’t hurt that the camera loves her as well. As an intelligent, confident, and well spoken person, Lucy really brought a presence to the set. You will definitely see her in many films to come.
Newcomer, Breanna Porter, who plays Luna, had her a-game on during filming. Luna was actually discovered when Terence was location scouting in Iowa for an upcoming photo shoot with Lucy. While in Fort Madison along Main Street, he liked the aesthetics of a quaint bar called Corks and Barrels; he decided to go in and ask the bartender if he could photograph Lucy there. It turns out the bartender was Breanna whose welcoming demeanor, confidence and upbeat personality was something Terence couldn’t get out of his head. Terence wondered, “Could she be Luna? The Luna he had envisioned had many of the same characteristics as Breanna. He asked Beth to come to the bar to meet Breanna and Beth immediately understood why Terence felt she would be perfect. Although Breanna had never acted before, she expressed that it was something she wanted to do with her life. That’s all Terence and Beth needed to hear; the rest is history.
Beth said, “Sometimes we meet people in this world for a reason. I believe meeting Breanna was a blessing, and am sure when she’s seen in the movie, doors will open for her. She worked very hard, followed direction, and maintained a positive attitude on set.”
There’s no doubt Cameron Muston is a dramatic actor. He can cry, yell, or exhibit fear at an instant. Cameron is one of Beth’s former students. She has enjoyed watching Cameron act and sing in school performances. Beth felt “Intent Unknown” would be a great opportunity for Cameron to hone his skills and transition from stage to film.
Analysa Jackson has been acting in theatrical plays for the past couple years. As a matter of fact, she was in the same Shakesperian play as Lucy and Cameron. Terence was impressed with her performance. He felt Analysa would be a great addition to the cast as Amelia, Chase’s overly dramatic girlfriend.
Anita Sayago has been working as a producer with Terence Gordon for close to 10 years. She is currently a producer on this project and is happy to lend her marketing and writing skills where needed.
Other collaborators such as Deus Beni, who has been a longtime time friend and was the cinematographer on Intent Unknown. Deus Beni has worked with Terence for a number of years on music videos, commercials, and feature films.

In June of 2021, I traveled to the midwest, just as I have done many times over the months researching for a film project based upon the book 7 Doors In, written by Beth Rondeau. The book chronicles Beth's journey teaching behind prison walls of a maximum-security prison, and what she was able to accomplish among the offenders in the three years she was there. The project is in the script development stage, and I’m slated to direct the film under a production company to be announced later in the film via the trade magazines.
However, that was not the only project I had while in the midwest. I was asked to photograph Lucy Deacon, who has been named the Face of WOHA, Diversity Awareness Youth Leader. This organization was founded by Desziree Richardson in the UK, and has an international reach to several countries around the world. Below are some of the behind the scenes footage of the shoot, and some of the photos that will be featured.

Have you ever had that dream of flying in your veins that can't seem to escape you? That has been my lifelong dream from the time I was five years old. I remember traveling on BOAC from England to Guyana. I received my first logbook and a tiny pair of gold wings on that flight.
The log book had about seven thousand miles and the captain’s signature. The first time I got behind the controls of an aircraft was in America on September 23rd,1990, at Islip Long Island in a Cessna 152 N93292 belonging to Brooklyn Aviation. I remember feeling an immediate belonging to the sky on takeoff.

I remember being in awe of these metal birds, even though a dangerous passion some would say. A few years later, tragedy struck when my father was on an operation and the helicopter he was in crashed. He and the two occupants survived. Badly broken and injured, all three occupants were flown to Georgetown Hospital. I remember going to the hospital; there was a distinct smell that lingered in the air. The pilot injured his back and I recollect seeing him in what looked like a hamster wheel. To this day, I can visualize the blood-torn clothing and smell of mercuro-chrome. Thankfully, they all made a recovery. The pilot who remains disabled, continues his passion of flying. He owns an Air Operation in Guyana.
Inspired by the Pilot Next Door
I was so shaken by my father’s accident that for the longest time, I feared flying helicopters. I came to the realization that accidents happen but I couldn’t live my life in fear. I needed to follow my passion. Therefore, I continued to hang around my father's military base. As a child, I admired many of the Guyanese pilots. I knew many of them by name and would attend the ribbon cutting events for any aircrafts that were purchased. I will never forget Pilot Tony Austin who flew for the GDF and then GAC. He lived two doors down from my house. He gave me my first book on Aviation. Unfortunately, Tony passed away. I remember how he waved to me from the cockpit window and gave me words of encouragement. That meant so much to me. I wish I would have told him the positive impact he made on my life.
Moved to the United States
At the age of 17, I came to the United States to live with my mother in New York and attend the University. I joined the US Army by the age of twenty. Six years into my service commitment, I still had my passion for flying.
President Clinton deactivated military units and I was given an opportunity to take any assignment and unit of choice. I chose the aviation option. I was so grateful as a friend arranged for me to interview at his unit. Sadly, I was given many excuses from the commander as to why I couldn’t fly for that unit or attend the flight school. I tried, for I had already amassed several hours in fix wing flying including 20 hours of solo with a long cross country flying completed. Additionally, my training included 10 hours in a R22 and C300 type helicopters.
However, it was not in my cards. That very week, my friend who was an instructor, informed me that they just sent five men to flight school who had zero flight time. I was disappointed but, moved on. I continued on in the US Army both in Signal Battalion and then into Military Intelligence before being discharged at the end of my eight year contract.
The R22 Helicopter Crashes.
I recall heading out to Islip airport, and hearing on the news, as I'm walking out door, that a Robinson R22 helicopter crashed. If I recall it was LTE - loss of tail rotor effectiveness. This happened to be the same helicopter and tail number I was flying previously and heading to that day. The incident occurred with my Instructor and a commercial student. Thankfully, they both survived the crash in the Long Island waters, however 186KC was destroyed.
Tragedy Struck Again
I received a call from my then Instructor and now a very good friend Ron Sadler. He informed me that one of my former Instructors from NAI, Tony Samuels was in fatal accident in Columbus, Ohio. He was the co-pilot on a United Express flight that encountered bad weather conditions. You can find details from the crash at the above link. This was a reality check for me. I was fortunate to know many pilots in South America and in the US, however this in turn also meant that I needed to experience the sadness of hearing of some that passed away doing the very thing we shared in common.
When Tony died, it hit home for me. He and I flew together, and spent many nights on the phone discussing aviation. I enjoyed our talks as I learned so much about his life’s ambitions. Nevertheless, I pushed on. I took an extended break from aviation to now pursue film directing at NYU.

Film Directing
While attending the University, I was also working in Corporate America as an integration engineer. I chose to leave my position in engineering to raise my boys and build my film production companies. Today my main career includes directing and or producing feature films, while building my Youthful Ambition brand: Hermafrodita, Prime Of Your Life, and For Michelle.
In Production
I recently directed the Alfredo Versace documentary film called What's In A Name! A Versace Story, and Produced the Legendary Marion Williams’ documentary.
I am in development of a film based on the book Seven Doors In. This book will be released in May 2021. The book can be pre-ordered on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other places. The book tells the story of one teacher’s experience behind prison walls. Walk in through those seven steel doors with her and see what happens behind Door 7.
Serving with the USAF - Civil Air Patrol.
After a twenty-year break, my passion and desire to fly continued in the back of my mind. I joined the Civil Air Patrol and received my Mission Scanner and Mission Observer ratings at a Senior squadron in Concord. I enjoy the operations aspect of the work. Everyone in CAP is a volunteer, but we are professional volunteers doing a serious mission for FEMA, the Military, and many other organizations. Emergency services, cadet programs, and aerospace education are our focus. CAP is part of the USAF's total force. I enjoy contributing to this prestigious organization.
A Promise to my Father
My dad, now very ill with pancreatic cancer, reminds me to not take life for granted. It was father's day 2020 when he made me promise him that I would get my license and ratings. I'm on scheduled to complete my training this year. I'm very grateful for his encouragement and that of my family and friends.
My Brothers Share my Passion for Flying
It is exciting for me to know that two of my brothers are also following their passions to fly. They recently decided to attend flight school to be pilots. We are researching business opportunities in the world of aviation. Perhaps some day we will have the opportunity to contribute to the world of aviation.
Youthful Ambition YA
I am currently training with ACES (Aviation Career Education Services) Aviation. This is a new flight school. As I document my journey in aviation, you will see and hear more about ACES and YA’s collaboration. Perhaps someday you will see the Youthful Ambition's Logo on their planes and others!
